Each year at the December 3rd X-Ring ceremony, an honorary X-ring is bestowed upon a member of StFX community who, while not a graduate of the university, exemplifies a commitment to Xaverian values.
The university accepts nominees for this tremendous honour via the following process.
The recipient of an Honorary X-Ring must meet the following criteria:
- They must not already have an X-Ring
- They must have demonstrated outstanding contribution to the Xaverian community, gauged in part by number of years/services to the Xaverian community
- They must be exemplary of the Xaverian motto: “Quaecumque sunt vera” (Whatsoever things are true).
How to Nominate a Candidate for an Honorary X-Ring
- Any person can nominate in writing another person to be a recipient of an Honorary X-Ring.
- The nomination documentation shall include:
- a letter of nomination that establishes the eligibility of the nominee.
- the letter of nomination shall be supported by at least two letters of support, but no more than 10 supporting letters in total.
- The nomination letter and accompanying letters of support must be submitted to the Chair of the X-Ring Committee by email, president@theu.ca by October 15th.
- Nominations shall be kept in the pool of candidates for a period of 5 years, after which they will be removed.
Selection Process:
- The voting members of the X-Ring Committee shall undertake the selection of a recipient from the nominations in the pool of candidates.
- Only those nominees that meet the eligibility requirements will be reviewed by the X-Ring Committee.
- The selection of a recipient shall take place before November 1st or a date to be determined at the discretion of the X-Ring Committee.
- Should the X-Ring Committee not come to a consensus on a recipient, it shall be decided by majority vote
- The Honorary X-Ring shall be purchased from the University X-Ring Store. The cost of purchase shall be shared by the StFX Students’ Union and the StFX Alumni Affairs Office.
- From time to time, the Board of Governors may also pass a motion at a regular meeting to award an Honorary X-Ring to a candidate of their choosing. Prior to a motion being submitted, The Board Chair or a member of the Board Executive should consult and notify the Chair(s) of the X-Ring Committee. The Honorary X-Ring will be purchased from the X-Ring Store and the cost of purchase will be borne by the Board of Governors.
- X-Rings presented by the BoG will not be awarded at the X-Ring Ceremony and Committee Chairs will work with the BoG Chair to find an appropriate time to award the X-Ring at events such as the President's Gala, Blue and White Gala, etc.
