Program Options

Data Science at StFX is an interdisciplinary field that blends mathematics, statistics, and computer programming with real-world applications across diverse domains. Students engage in hands-on, project-based learning using real data, gaining experience with tools like R, and integrating subject-based knowledge from their chosen areas of interest.

Housed in the Department of Mathematics and Statistics, the program emphasizes flexibility and customization. Students begin by building a strong foundation in core data science skills, then apply those skills through domain-specific projects that reflect their academic and professional goals.

StFX offers a range of academic pathways in Data Science:

  • Bachelor of Science (BSc) with Major or Honours in Data Science
  • Minor in Data Science (24 credits)
  • Certificate in Data Science (30 credits), which can be completed alongside another degree
  • Post-Baccalaureate Diploma (PBD) in Data Science (60 credits over two years), designed for students who already hold an undergraduate degree and are new to the field
  • Co-op options available for BSc Major, Honours, and Post-Baccalaureate Diploma students
